Nutrition fundamentally shapes your physical health, mental well-being, and susceptibility to illness. For nursing students and healthcare professionals, understanding this relationship is crucial for patient education and promoting preventive care.

Understanding nutrition and its role in health
The World Health Organization defines nutrition as a critical part of health and development, noting that better nutrition is related to improved infant, child, and maternal health, stronger immune systems, safer pregnancy and childbirth, and lower risk of non-communicable diseases. Nutrients are chemical substances required by the body to sustain basic functions and are optimally obtained through a balanced diet.
There are six major classes of nutrients essential for human health: carbohydrates, lipids (fats), proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water. These nutrients work together to provide energy, build and repair tissues, and regulate body processes. When any of these components is deficient or excessive, health problems follow.
Macronutrients: the energy providers
Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are called macronutrients because the body needs them in larger amounts. Carbohydrates function as the primary source of cellular energy and are particularly essential for the brain and nervous system. The body needs adequate protein for growth, muscle repair, immune function, and hormone production. Dietary fats help absorb key vitamins and minerals, contribute to cell function and structure, and protect body organs.
Each macronutrient serves distinct purposes. While carbohydrates provide quick energy, proteins build antibodies and enzymes, and fats store energy for later use. The balance among these three determines whether your body has the resources it needs for daily activities and long-term health.
Micronutrients: small but mighty
Micronutrients are vitamins and minerals that your body needs in smaller amounts but are essential for countless bodily functions. Many people are mildly deficient in certain vitamins and minerals from a lack of dietary variety. While mild deficiencies may go unnoticed initially, as micronutrient undernutrition becomes more severe, it can begin to have serious and lasting effects.
Key micronutrients include iron for oxygen transport, calcium for bone health, vitamin A for vision and immunity, iodine for thyroid function, and zinc for wound healing and immune response. Health effects of micronutrient deficiency include impaired physical growth, weight loss, immune system vulnerability, neurological disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and skin problems.
How poor nutrition affects health
When the body does not receive adequate or balanced nutrition, it cannot function optimally. Malnutrition, in all its forms, includes undernutrition (wasting, stunting, underweight), inadequate vitamins or minerals, overweight, obesity, and resulting diet-related non-communicable diseases. The consequences extend beyond physical symptoms to affect mental health, cognitive development, and economic productivity.
Undernutrition and its consequences
Undernutrition occurs when the body does not receive enough calories, protein, or micronutrients. Malnutrition is both a cause and consequence of disease, existing in institutional care and the community. Weight loss due to depletion of fat and muscle mass is often the most obvious sign of malnutrition. Importantly, muscle function declines before changes in muscle mass occur, suggesting that altered nutrient intake has an immediate impact independent of structural changes.
The physical consequences are severe. In children, undernutrition can result in stunting (low height-for-age) and wasting (low weight-for-height), both of which increase vulnerability to infections and may cause permanent developmental delays. Nearly half of deaths among children under five years of age are linked to undernutrition, mostly occurring in low- and middle-income countries.
Two severe forms of protein-energy malnutrition are kwashiorkor and marasmus. Marasmus results from severe deficiency of calories and protein, typically affecting infants and very young children. It leads to weight loss, loss of muscle and fat, and dehydration. Kwashiorkor, on the other hand, occurs when protein deficiency is more severe than calorie deficiency, causing fluid retention and swelling, particularly in the abdomen.
The burden of anemia
Anemia is one of the most widespread nutritional deficiencies globally. WHO estimates that 40% of children under five years and 37% of pregnant women worldwide are anaemic. Thirty percent of women of reproductive age also suffer from this condition.
Iron is an essential part of hemoglobin, myoglobin, and various enzymes, which is why its deficiency leads mainly to anemia but also causes several other adverse effects. Symptoms include fatigue, weakness, pale skin, shortness of breath, and impaired cognitive function. In children under two years of age, iron deficiency anemia likely affects brain function acutely and chronically, potentially causing lasting developmental delays.
Infections and weakened immunity
Nutrition and immunity are deeply interconnected. A malnourished person has a weakened immune system, making them more susceptible to infections. Conversely, infections can worsen nutritional status by increasing metabolic demands, reducing appetite, and impairing nutrient absorption.
Protein-energy malnutrition and diarrhea typically interact in a vicious cycle. Diarrheal diseases cause nutrient loss and reduced absorption, while malnutrition makes children more vulnerable to severe diarrhea. This cycle contributes significantly to childhood mortality in developing countries. Similarly, diseases like measles and tuberculosis are more frequent and severe in malnourished individuals.
The double burden of malnutrition
Today, the world faces a double burden of malnutrition that includes both undernutrition and overweight, especially in low- and middle-income countries. This means that within the same communities, and sometimes within the same households, some individuals suffer from nutrient deficiencies while others struggle with obesity and related conditions.
The WHO has added overnutrition to its definition of malnutrition to recognize the detrimental health effects caused by excessive consumption of nutrients. This includes the effects of overweight and obesity, which are strongly associated with a list of non-communicable diseases. When the body has excess calories, it stores them as fat, leading to weight gain and increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers.
In 2022, 2.5 billion adults were overweight, including 890 million living with obesity, while 390 million were underweight. This paradox reflects the complex relationship between food availability, food quality, and health outcomes in modern food systems.
The role of balanced diet in promoting health
A healthy diet protects against many chronic non-communicable diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Eating a variety of foods while consuming less salt, sugars, and saturated and industrially-produced trans-fats are essential for maintaining good health.
Components of a balanced diet
The NHS Eatwell Guide recommends eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day, basing meals on higher fibre starchy foods, having some dairy or dairy alternatives, eating beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other protein, choosing unsaturated oils and spreads in small amounts, and drinking plenty of fluids.
People with diets rich in vegetables and fruit have significantly lower risk of obesity, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Fruits and vegetables provide essential vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre, plant protein, and antioxidants that help the body fight inflammation and maintain optimal function.
Starting healthy habits early
Healthy dietary practices start early in life. Breastfeeding fosters healthy growth and improves cognitive development, with long-term benefits such as reducing the risk of becoming overweight or obese and developing NCDs later in life. From six months of age, breast milk should be complemented with a variety of adequate, safe, and nutrient-dense complementary foods.
For adults, maintaining energy balance is crucial. Energy intake should match energy expenditure to avoid unhealthy weight gain. Total fat should not exceed 30% of total energy intake, saturated fats should be less than 10%, and trans-fats less than 1%. Limiting free sugars to less than 10% of total energy intake is part of a healthy diet, with additional benefits when reduced further to under 5%.
Nutrition as disease prevention
For decades, it has been known that the occurrence and course of many diseases such as cancer, stroke, and heart attacks are affected by diet. Research shows that diets rich in red and processed meat lead to higher risk of cancer, especially colorectal cancer, while eating more vegetables and fruits and less meat can decrease overall cancer risk and improve health.
Research shows proper nutrition can reduce your risk for diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. It supports the healing process whether you are recovering from surgery, illness, or infection. Experts are also exploring the influence that nutrition may have on mental health, recognizing that diet affects both body and mind.
A well-rounded diet provides the necessary nutrients for your body to function efficiently, helping reduce the risk of chronic diseases, improve energy levels, and support overall mental and physical health. By focusing on whole foods and mindful eating, individuals can take control of their health outcomes.
Practical steps for better nutrition
Improving nutrition does not require drastic changes. Small, consistent adjustments can make significant differences over time. Focus on adding more fruits and vegetables to meals, choosing whole grains over refined grains, selecting lean protein sources, and limiting processed foods high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats.
Hydration is equally important. Water is essential for digestion, circulation, temperature regulation, and waste elimination. Aim for adequate fluid intake daily, adjusting for activity level and climate. Foods with high water content, such as fruits and vegetables, also contribute to hydration goals.
For individuals with specific health conditions, dietary restrictions, or increased nutritional needs (such as pregnant women or older adults), consulting with healthcare providers or registered dietitians can help ensure nutritional requirements are met safely.
