Driving a car makes it easier to learn to drive a truck. This phenomenon-where knowledge or skills acquired in one context influence performance in another-is called transfer of learning. For educators and nursing professionals, understanding how transfer works is essential for designing effective instruction that prepares students for real-world challenges.

What is transfer of learning?
Transfer of learning refers to the application or carryover of knowledge, skills, habits, and attitudes from one learning situation to another. It occurs when past experiences affect learning and performance in new situations. This concept is fundamental to education because, ideally, what students learn in the classroom should be useful beyond it.
The idea of transfer has been studied for over a century. In 1901, psychologists Edward Thorndike and Robert Woodworth proposed that transfer depends on how similar the original learning task and the new task are. If two situations share common elements, learning from one transfers more easily to the other. This foundational theory, known as the identical elements theory, continues to influence how educators design curricula today.
Types of transfer of learning
Transfer of learning is not a single phenomenon-it occurs in different forms depending on how past learning affects new learning. Understanding these types helps educators anticipate how students will apply their knowledge.
Positive transfer
Positive transfer happens when learning in one situation facilitates learning in another. This is the goal of most education. For example, a student who learns to sound out words in reading class can use that skill to decode unfamiliar words while reading independently. Similarly, a person who knows how to ride a bicycle finds it easier to learn to ride a motorcycle because both activities share balance and steering elements.
In nursing education, positive transfer is crucial. Students who master anatomical terminology in one course can apply that vocabulary across pathology, pharmacology, and clinical practice. The skills gained during simulation exercises transfer to actual patient care settings, making practice in safe environments directly valuable.
Negative transfer
Negative transfer occurs when prior learning interferes with new learning. This typically happens when a learner incorrectly assumes similarities between two situations. A common example is when someone who drives on the right side of the road struggles to adapt to left-side driving in another country. The deeply ingrained habit of right-side driving creates confusion rather than helping.
In healthcare, negative transfer can have serious implications. A nurse trained to administer medications using one system might make errors when transitioning to a facility with different protocols. Recognizing when prior knowledge interferes with new learning is critical for educators, who can then design instruction that explicitly addresses potential misconceptions.
Zero transfer
Sometimes, prior learning has no effect-positive or negative-on new learning. This is called zero transfer. For instance, knowing the history of ancient civilizations typically has no impact on learning to drive a car. The two domains share no common elements, so no transfer occurs.
Bilateral transfer: learning across body sides
A fascinating form of transfer occurs between the two sides of the body. Bilateral transfer refers to the phenomenon where learning a skill with one limb facilitates the ability to perform that skill with the opposite limb. When you practice writing with your dominant hand, your non-dominant hand also improves at the task-even without direct practice.
Research confirms that when motor learning is accomplished with one limb, the ability to perform the same task with the untrained limb improves. This transfer occurs through neural mechanisms involving communication between brain hemispheres via the corpus callosum. Scientists have identified three main models explaining this phenomenon: callosal access, the proficiency model, and cross-activation hypothesis.
Bilateral transfer has significant applications in rehabilitation. For stroke patients with one-sided weakness, training the unaffected hand can improve the performance of the affected hand, offering new pathways for motor recovery. Nursing students can appreciate this principle when understanding rehabilitation approaches for patients recovering from stroke or injury.
Near transfer versus far transfer
Researchers also distinguish transfer by how similar the original and new contexts are. Near transfer occurs when knowledge is applied in similar contexts. A student who learns to solve algebraic equations can use the same manipulation skills to rearrange formulas in physics class. The contexts are different subjects but require similar cognitive operations.
Far transfer involves applying learning to contexts that are quite different from the original learning situation. An economics student who studied game theory might apply principles of strategic cooperation in a completely unrelated management role. Far transfer is generally more difficult to achieve but represents deeper, more flexible learning.
For nursing education, both types matter. Near transfer helps students apply medication calculation skills across different drug types. Far transfer enables students to use critical thinking principles learned in case studies to solve unexpected clinical problems they’ve never encountered before.
Key theories explaining transfer of learning
Several theoretical frameworks help explain why and how transfer occurs.
Theory of identical elements
Developed by Thorndike, this theory states that transfer occurs primarily when there are similar or identical elements between the original learning context and the new context. The more two tasks share common features-whether physical, cognitive, or procedural-the greater the transfer. This theory encourages educators to design learning experiences that closely mirror real-world applications.
Theory of generalization
Proposed by Charles Judd, the generalization theory suggests that transfer depends on learners’ ability to extract general principles from specific experiences and apply them broadly. According to this view, understanding underlying concepts matters more than surface-level similarities. Students who grasp the principle behind a procedure can apply it to novel situations, even when specific details differ.
Low road and high road transfer
Researchers David Perkins and Gavriel Salomon described two mechanisms of transfer. Low road (reflexive) transfer involves the automatic triggering of well-practiced routines by familiar stimuli. High road (mindful) transfer requires deliberate abstraction and conscious effort to find connections between situations. Effective education should develop both automatic skills and reflective thinking abilities.
Factors influencing transfer of learning
Several factors determine whether and how well transfer occurs:
Similarity between contexts. Greater similarity between learning and application contexts generally promotes positive transfer. When educational settings closely resemble workplace environments, students transition more smoothly.
Depth of understanding. Students who achieve deep comprehension of core concepts, rather than memorizing isolated facts, are more likely to recognize when and how to apply their knowledge in new situations.
Motivation and attitudes. Learners who see the value in applying their knowledge and who actively seek connections are more successful at transferring learning.
Instructional methods. Teaching approaches that emphasize understanding relationships, encourage practice across varied contexts, and make transfer expectations explicit produce better outcomes.
Intelligence and cognitive flexibility. Individual differences in cognitive abilities influence how readily learners can identify underlying principles and adapt knowledge to new situations.
Teaching strategies to maximize positive transfer
Educators can employ specific strategies to enhance transfer of learning in their classrooms and clinical settings.
Focus on core concepts. Rather than covering content superficially, help students comprehend principles that organize, guide, and explain content and skills. With a strong conceptual framework, students can recognize when different situations operate through similar principles.
Provide varied practice opportunities. Learning in multiple contexts creates more neural connections and improves generalization. Students who practice skills in different settings develop more flexible competencies.
Use authentic activities. Design learning experiences that resemble real-world applications. Simulation labs, case studies, and clinical rotations help nursing students practice in contexts similar to their future workplace.
Encourage reflective thinking. Ask students to articulate how concepts connect across different topics or how skills might apply in different situations. This metacognitive practice strengthens high road transfer.
Build on prior knowledge. Assess what students already know and explicitly connect new information to existing understanding. Making these links visible helps students construct integrated knowledge networks rather than isolated facts.
Apply hugging and bridging techniques. Hugging involves making learning situations similar to future application contexts. Bridging involves explicitly helping students see connections and prompting them to think about where else they might use what they’ve learned.
Transfer of learning in nursing practice
For nursing students, transfer of learning has immediate practical significance. The patient assessment skills learned in coursework must transfer to clinical placements. Communication techniques practiced in role-plays must transfer to interactions with real patients and families. Knowledge of pharmacology must transfer to safe medication administration across diverse patient populations.
Educators who understand transfer principles design curricula that scaffold learning effectively, moving from foundational concepts to complex applications while maintaining clear connections. They create simulations that mirror clinical realities and debrief experiences to highlight transferable principles.
