In nursing education, the classroom remains a foundational space where future healthcare professionals develop the knowledge and skills they need to provide safe, effective patient care. But how educators teach in that classroom makes all the difference. Teaching methods shape not only what students learn but how well they retain information, apply concepts in clinical settings, and develop critical thinking abilities essential for nursing practice.

Classroom teaching approaches in nursing education generally fall into two categories: teacher-centered methods, where the instructor leads content delivery, and student-centered methods, where learners actively engage with material and each other. Both approaches have their place, and understanding when and how to use each can transform educational outcomes.

Teacher-centered approaches in nursing education

Teacher-centered methods position the instructor as the primary knowledge source. The educator controls the pace, content selection, and delivery format while students function mainly as information receivers. These approaches typically feature structured delivery, efficiency in covering large volumes of content, and clear learning expectations defined by the instructor.

The lecture method

The lecture method is perhaps the oldest and most widely used teaching strategy in nursing education. In this approach, the instructor presents information through organized presentations while students listen and take notes. Despite ongoing debates about its effectiveness, the lecture method persists because it offers distinct advantages in specific educational contexts.

Advantages of the lecture method: Lectures allow educators to communicate large amounts of information efficiently within limited timeframes. This efficiency makes lectures particularly valuable when teaching foundational nursing concepts, anatomy, pharmacology, or theoretical frameworks that require comprehensive coverage. The instructor maintains complete control over content delivery, ensuring that essential concepts are addressed and curriculum standards are met. For new educators, this control provides comfort and structure.

Lectures can reach large groups of students simultaneously, making them cost-effective for institutions. When delivered by an engaging instructor, lectures can stimulate thinking and help students develop concentration and listening skills. They also serve as useful methods for introducing new topics, establishing common understanding of principles, and supplementing other teaching approaches.

Limitations of the lecture method: The primary criticism of traditional lectures centers on passive learning. Students sit and listen without actively engaging with content, which can limit retention and deep understanding. Research comparing lecture methods to active learning approaches has shown that students in lecture-based courses may be more likely to struggle compared to those in more interactive learning environments.

Traditional lectures provide limited opportunities for students to ask questions, clarify doubts in real-time, or apply knowledge immediately. The one-way communication format means instructors receive little immediate feedback about student comprehension. Lectures also struggle to address individual learning needs and may not develop problem-solving, decision-making, or analytical thinking skills as effectively as other methods.

Student-centered approaches in nursing education

Student-centered methods shift the focus from instructor-led delivery to active learner participation. In these approaches, students take ownership of their learning journey while instructors facilitate, guide, and provide feedback. These methods typically promote deeper engagement, critical thinking development, and skills that translate more directly to clinical practice.

Discussion-based methods

Discussion methods encourage active participation and help students develop the communication skills essential for clinical decision-making. These approaches promote active engagement as students verbalize their understanding and question concepts, reveal misconceptions that instructors can address, and encourage students to benefit from diverse perspectives and peer experiences.

Case-based discussions use realistic patient scenarios that students analyze collaboratively, helping them contextualize theoretical nursing practices in real-world situations. Small group discussions allow students to work through problems together, building collaboration skills while deepening their understanding of nursing concepts.

Role-playing

Role-playing activities have students act out scenarios based on real-world healthcare situations. This method has proven particularly effective in nursing education. Role-playing helps students develop patient-focused interpersonal communication, quick problem-solving, and decision-making skills as they practice nurse-patient interactions in a safe learning environment.

Research demonstrates significant benefits of role-playing. One study found that role-playing led to a substantial improvement in nursing students’ self-efficacy, providing a safe space for practicing clinical skills and enhancing professional confidence. Students in role-playing groups reported higher satisfaction with learning and showed better retention compared to traditional lecture-based instruction.

Role-playing scenarios can address various nursing concepts including empathy development, patient education, managing non-adherence, breaking bad news, and resolving ethical conflicts. The method encourages students to put themselves in different perspectives, developing sensitivity to patients’ feelings and situations they will encounter in clinical practice.

Demonstration

Demonstration is essential for teaching psychomotor skills and clinical procedures common in nursing practice. This method follows a structured progression: the instructor first demonstrates the complete skill at normal speed, then repeats it with detailed explanation of each step. Students then practice under supervision with instructor feedback.

Modern nursing education enhances traditional demonstrations through technology integration. Video recordings allow students to review procedures repeatedly at their own pace. Skills laboratories provide safe environments where students can practice techniques on manikins before applying them in actual patient care settings. These controlled practice opportunities help students develop competence and confidence before clinical rotations.

Project-based learning

Project-based learning involves students working individually or in groups to investigate real-world nursing problems over extended periods. This approach develops research skills as students learn to gather and evaluate evidence, encourages creative and innovative approaches to healthcare challenges, builds collaboration abilities as teams navigate complex tasks together, and enhances time management as students coordinate multiple tasks across timeframes.

Successful project implementation requires clear rubrics, scheduled checkpoints for instructor feedback, adequate resources and support, and meaningful opportunities for students to present findings and receive feedback. Projects might involve developing patient education materials, creating care plans for complex cases, researching evidence-based interventions, or analyzing healthcare policies.

Choosing the right approach

The most effective nursing educators don’t rely exclusively on one method but strategically combine approaches based on learning objectives, content type, student needs, and available resources. Foundational theoretical content might be efficiently introduced through lectures, then reinforced through discussions or case studies. Complex clinical skills benefit from demonstration followed by supervised practice. Critical thinking development requires active methods like problem-based learning or simulation.

Research comparing traditional and interactive teaching methods found that interactive approaches resulted in significantly higher student scores and satisfaction. Students reported benefits including better understanding of material, increased motivation to learn, immediate feedback, and reduced early fatigue during class sessions.

The goal is not to abandon traditional methods entirely but to recognize their limitations and supplement them with approaches that promote active learning, critical thinking, and practical application. As nursing practice becomes increasingly complex, education must prepare students not just with knowledge but with the ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and adapt to rapidly changing healthcare environments.
