For instance, a research question about the effectiveness of telehealth nursing interventions for rural diabetic patients would shape the review’s scope. The researcher would include literature on telehealth in diabetes care, rural healthcare access, and perhaps nursing interventions for diabetes management more broadly, while excluding studies on telehealth for other conditions or urban populations unless they offered relevant methodological insights.

How scope helps narrow and refine focus

The process of conducting a literature review often reveals that initial research questions need refinement. As researchers engage with the literature, they discover which areas have been extensively studied and which remain underexplored. This discovery process itself helps narrow and clarify the focus of the study.

For example, a nurse researcher initially interested in studying “nurse burnout” might discover through the literature review that this broad topic has been extensively studied. They’re valuable for educational purposes and for examining how ideas have evolved over time.

Systematic reviews follow rigorous, predetermined methodologies to identify, select, and critically appraise relevant research. They often include meta-analysis-statistical techniques for combining results from multiple studies. Integrative reviews allow for diverse methodologies, including both experimental and non-experimental research. Scoping reviews map literature and provide overviews of evidence in particular fields, helping determine whether a full systematic review is feasible or necessary.

Understanding these different types helps researchers select the approach most appropriate for their specific research needs and the questions they’re trying to answer.
