For instance, rather than broadly stating “nursing burnout is a problem,” a well-crafted problem statement might specify “the relationship between staffing ratios and burnout among critical care nurses remains inadequately understood.”

Defining purpose and objectives

While closely related to the problem statement, the purpose and objectives provide the roadmap for your research journey. The purpose statement articulates the overarching goal or intent of your study, explaining what you hope to accomplish and why. This might include improving nursing practice, understanding patient experiences, or testing a new intervention.

Objectives break down this purpose into specific, measurable tasks. These should be realistic and achievable within your study’s timeframe and resources. Well-written objectives often follow the SMART criteria: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Each objective should directly support your study’s overall purpose while providing clear direction for your methodology.

Establishing assumptions and conceptual framework

Research assumptions are the foundational beliefs that underpin your study. These might include assumptions about participant behavior, the reliability of certain measurement tools, or the stability of certain conditions during your study period. Explicitly stating these assumptions demonstrates transparency and helps reviewers understand the boundaries of your research.

The conceptual or theoretical framework provides the lens through which you view your research problem. This framework guides your study by connecting it to established theories or models in nursing or related fields. Whether you’re using a nursing theory, a behavioral change model, or a quality improvement framework, clearly articulating this foundation strengthens your proposal’s academic rigor.

Clarifying definitions and hypotheses

The definition of terms section ensures all readers interpret key concepts consistently. This includes both theoretical definitions and operational definitions that explain exactly how you’ll measure or observe specific variables. For example, if studying “patient satisfaction,” you’d define not only what satisfaction means conceptually but also specify the tool or scale you’ll use to measure it.

Hypotheses, when applicable to your research design, represent your predictions about relationships between variables. These must be testable, falsifiable, and consistent with existing knowledge. Research design and approach

Your research design should align with your research question and objectives. Whether quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods, each approach serves different purposes. Quantitative designs measure numerical data and test relationships, qualitative approaches explore experiences and meanings, while mixed methods combine both for comprehensive understanding.

Population and sampling

Clearly define your target population and explain your sampling strategy. Inclusion and exclusion criteria should be explicitly stated, along with your planned sample size and its justification. Whether using random sampling, purposive sampling, or another method, explain why this approach suits your research question and how you’ll recruit participants.

Data collection methods

Detail the specific tools and procedures you’ll use to gather data. This might include surveys, interviews, clinical measurements, or observational methods. For each tool, explain its validity and reliability, or if developing new instruments, describe your validation process. Include when and how data will be collected, who will collect it, and any training required for data collectors.

Data analysis techniques

Describe how you’ll analyze your data, whether through statistical methods for quantitative data or thematic analysis for qualitative data. Specify which statistical tests or qualitative approaches you’ll employ and explain why these methods are appropriate for your research question.

This section must demonstrate your commitment to protecting participants’ rights, safety, and wellbeing. Address how you’ll obtain informed consent, maintain confidentiality, and handle sensitive data. Explain procedures for minimizing risks to participants and what you’ll do if adverse events occur.

Detail your plan for obtaining Institutional Review Board approval and any other required ethical clearances.
