What is the survey approach in nursing research?

The survey approach is a non-experimental research method designed to collect information from participants without manipulating variables or providing interventions. Through structured questions, researchers can describe characteristics, explore relationships, and examine patterns within populations. This method enables nurse researchers to gather primary data from patients, caregivers, nurses, and other stakeholders to address gaps in clinical, educational, or policy areas.

Unlike experimental studies where researchers control variables, survey research observes and records information as it naturally occurs. This observational nature makes it particularly suitable for examining sensitive topics or situations where experimental manipulation would be unethical or impractical.

Data collection methods in survey research

Survey researchers employ three primary methods to collect data, each offering distinct advantages depending on the research question and target population.

Questionnaires

Questionnaires are the most common tool in survey research. These can be administered online through platforms like Survey Monkey, distributed via postal mail, or handed out directly to participants. Online questionnaires have become increasingly popular due to their cost-effectiveness and ease of data collection. Questions may be closed-ended with predetermined response options or open-ended to capture detailed participant perspectives.

Interviews

Structured interviews involve asking participants standardized questions, either in person or by telephone. This method allows researchers to probe responses and clarify misunderstandings, potentially yielding richer data than self-administered questionnaires. However, interviews require more time and resources to conduct.

Observations

Some surveys incorporate direct observation of behaviors or physical measurements. For example, researchers might observe hand hygiene practices among healthcare workers or measure vital signs as part of a health status survey.

Types of surveys in nursing research

Descriptive surveys

Cross-sectional surveys

Cross-sectional surveys collect data at a single point in time, providing a snapshot of variables at that specific moment. However, cross-sectional designs cannot establish temporal relationships or determine which variable came first.

Longitudinal surveys

Longitudinal surveys collect data from the same population at multiple time points, allowing researchers to track changes over time. These studies can range from weeks to decades, depending on the research question. Panel studies follow the same individuals repeatedly, while trend surveys examine the same population but may include different participants at each time point. Surveys are relatively inexpensive compared to other research methods. Online surveys eliminate printing and postage costs, while even paper-based surveys require minimal resources beyond questionnaire production. This affordability makes surveys accessible to researchers with limited funding.

Efficient data collection

Surveys enable researchers to reach large populations quickly, whether surveying hundreds of nurses across a region or thousands of patients nationally. This efficiency allows for rapid data gathering and faster project completion compared to labor-intensive methods like individual interviews.

High representativeness

By including large sample sizes, surveys can effectively represent broader populations. The data gathered from substantial numbers of respondents provides better descriptions of population characteristics, enhancing the generalizability of findings to similar groups.

Flexibility and versatility

Survey research demonstrates remarkable flexibility, accommodating both small-scale local studies and large national investigations. Researchers can examine multiple variables simultaneously, gathering diverse information within a single survey instrument.

Hypothesis generation

Survey findings often reveal unexpected patterns or relationships, generating hypotheses for future experimental research. These preliminary insights guide the development of more focused investigations that can establish causal relationships.

Standardization

Limitations of survey research

Lack of variable control

Response bias and accuracy

Inflexibility

Clear, unambiguous questions prevent misinterpretation, while appropriate sampling strategies enhance representativeness.
